The digital SAT format.
The SAT is a 2 hour 14 minute, fully digital, section-adaptive test taken on the Bluebook app. Two sections each for r&w and math.
Reading & Writing
- 54 questions across 2 modules
- 64 minutes total (32 min per module)
- ~1.2 min per question
- Short passages (25–150 words) + 1 question each
- Topics: standard english conventions, information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas
Math
- 44 questions across 2 modules
- 70 minutes total (35 min per module)
- ~1.6 min per question
- Desmos calculator allowed on every question. (learn more)
- Topics: algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, geometry and trigonometry
Within each section, your performance on Module 1 determines whether you get an easier or harder Module 2. Test-takers routed to the harder Module 2 can score up to 800 in that section; the easier Module 2 caps the section around 600.
Estimated thresholds: roughly 18+/27 on RW Module 1 and 14+/22 on Math Module 1 get you the hard Module 2. The calculator below uses these same thresholds.
